2020 Scholarship Recipients
This year we were able to raise $4,200 for our scholarship fund, providing 6 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who will be attending college in the fall to pursue a degree in engineering or computer science. We would like to thank our donors for helping make these scholarships possible. Learn more about the 2020 Golden Gate Section scholarship recipients below.
Ying Tan - Vicki & Shelby Solomon Scholarship
Ying Tan is a graduating senior from the Galileo Academy of Science and Technology in San Francisco, CA where she has been highly involved in student government and volunteering at a Chinese school. After becoming interested in genetics and DNA in her AP Biology class, Ying was able to do a research internship at the Roy Lab at UCSF studying stem cells and artificial kidneys. As an immigrant from China, Ying is very aware of the generational divide between immigrant families and wants to connect with both older and younger generations of Chinese immigrants to encourage better communication and acceptance. She also wants to use her voice to encourage girls in her community to go into STEM fields. Ying will attend UC Davis to study Biomedical Engineering this fall.
Nanthaya Verweij - Vicki & Shelby Solomon Scholarship
Nanthaya Verweij is a graduating senior from Middle College High School in San Pablo, CA where she has taken high school and college classes concurrently and will graduate with two Associate Degrees in Liberal Arts - Math & Science and Arts & Humanities. Originally from Thailand, Nanthaya became interested in STEM after hearing about her grandfather’s work on the country’s dams. When her hometown of Bangkok endured intense flooding when she was younger, she was further inspired to pursue engineering to help develop preventative measures for natural disasters. Nanthaya will be studying Civil Engineering at UC Davis this fall.
Vivian Liu - Laura Douglass Scholarship
Vivian Liu is a graduating senior from Arroyo High School in San Lorenzo, CA where she has excelled in academics and journalism. Through the organization Girls Who Code, Vivian was introduced to computer science and found that she was able to join her creativity and passion for STEM through programming. In the future, she hopes to continue growing her network of women in STEM through involvement in organizations like SWE and the National Center of Women & Informational Technology (NCWIT). Vivian will be attending UC Berkeley to major in computer science this fall.
Amanda Sayaseng
Amanda Sayaseng is a graduating senior from El Camino High School in Daly City, CA where she has been active in many sports and service organizations such as Students in Action and Heart in Motion. Amanda enjoys the creative and innovative aspects of computer science and hopes to combine them with her passion for giving back to the community by becoming a machine learning software engineer. She wants to improve diagnostic technology for cancer and other diseases and ultimately increase access to healthcare for developing countries through the use of artificial intelligence. She also wants to encourage other women to be confident and pursue engineering and computer science by sharing her own personal experiences with self-doubt. Amanda will be attending the University of Southern California to major in computer science this fall.
Caitlyn Berryhill
Caitlyn Berryhill is a graduating senior from Napa High School in Napa, CA where she has shined in academics and varsity sports. In addition to playing sports, Caitlyn has also spent time volunteering with her school Key Club and other organizations and working as a lifeguard. As Caitlyn has taken more advanced science and math courses, she has noticed the disparity of girls in these classes. She hopes to break this pattern and encourage younger female peers to follow in her footsteps as she works towards her goal of designing rockets to get people to Mars. This fall, Caitlyn will attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to major in mechanical engineering.
Jordyn Ludeman
Jordyn Ludeman is a graduating senior from Petaluma High School in Petaluma, CA where she succeeded in balancing a busy schedule of school, volunteer experiences, and work hours. Jordyn had the unique opportunity to take introductory engineering classes and metal shop at her high school, helping spark her interest in engineering and manufacturing. She also gained many leadership and management skills from her time spent volunteering at two children’s outdoor education camps and she looks forward to continuing to make an impact on others through her future work in engineering. Jordyn plans to attend an accredited engineering school this fall to study mechanical engineering.
